I had an N62 in an E60 550i M Sport. It was under BMW warranty, but still had issues with leaking plastic camcovers, leaking timing chain tensioners etc. I didn’t have the valve stem issue as I sold it within 6 months (gearbox issue). Garbage engine the N62 is.

What a shame! Maybe it was good I turned down that 4.8 S..... My M62 Schnitzer gets oil and filter every 3k for the last 50k, and coolant every year. I don’t take risks. It’s also had the heads off in 2010 for suspect overheating (turned out to be viscous clutch lol) and all new gaskets/re-engineering of heads etc. Shell Helix 5W40 oil and Mannol blue pre-mixed coolant means I shouldn’t ever see these sorts of issues.

Very cool. I'm in California and I have pretty much the same car. 2001 750iL in Biaritzblau Metallic that has been in southern California since 2004. No rust anywhere. Mostly exterior damage from dumb driving by previous owners. I expected your vehicle to be in better condition for a California car. All my vehicles are over 15 years old with no rust issues. But like you suspected, the sunlight (UV) is the biggest killer of cars here. It affects the paint and clear coat and just about all glues and adhesives. If left outdoors most of its life I can see why all the bits on the inside have started to fall off. My headliner is dropping just like yours but otherwise everything else is intact. It is a labor of love working on it but thats why I got it. What do you plan to do with yours? It needs quite a bit of work.

Hello mate I live in Thailand and its exactly the same story, I also have a e38 mine is a 730. V8il, and all the plastics are destroyed even the back lights and back bumper have gone totally brittle, the craziest thing though is the passenger airbag cover in the dashboard that's shrank ,so if you have a blue one please keep it for me, but the positive side is no rust, its even had a small bump on the back end with a poor quality repair about 10 years ago and that's not started to rust, so yes up and downs with hot climate.

Marvin Wilson

@The 777 Garage hello mate Thailand drives on the same side of the road as the UK, so right hand drive, I am going to try and make the car look a bit nicer, with possibly the newer all red back lights and the more modern head lights, also I would like an original cassette radio as someone has fitted a aftermarket CD player ,and none off the steering wheel controls work anymore, there is a CD changer in the boot so hopefully that will work when I get an original head unit, yes lots of little parts like that, so its going to take some time to do it all ,but I have no intentions of selling the car, so I am going to put some love into it, and make it smart again, I will come and see you in england the next time I am home , with a list of all the little parts I need ,as most of them are unobtainable in Thailand now. So thanks for replying on please keep that piece off dash for me .cheers.

M30's are such reliable motors. Theres a reason they were used for so many years. They also love boost. I would source a 5 speed swap for the e23, go through it and upgrade the suspension/ tires/ brakes. Then drive it and enjoy. The earlier m30b32 has a more agressive cam installed than the later 3.2/ 3.4, so thats a bonus. There are some good upgrades for them like a hfm style MAF, injectors, exhaust, etc. They're fun to drive with the manual trans, just like an e28 is. Great score on the car, plus it already has the nice euro bumpers and headlights that us Americans prefer. E34'S rock as well. I've owned 6 of them. The 540/6 msport was my favorite and I had two. A great budget build for your e23 with a Holset strapped to it and the proper supporting mods and you could really surprise some people. I had a built '83 533 and it was a blast to drive and really moved decent. Like I said, nice score on the car. Will be eager to see what you end up doing with it!

@Pete Savel Thanks for the reply. I'm currently having issues with My 2001 E38 750iL where I think a blown head gasket compromised the Bank 2 CAT and burned open the EKAT (CAT preheater). I tried the non-fouler extensions to eliminate the inefficiency code with no luck. I am going to try the Cataclean next. I have high hopes for that. But the Catalyst Preheater failure code keeps popping up. My next step would be a tuning out of the EKAT circuit in the DME but I'm afraid if I take if for a smog check the inspection might reveal a recode of the DME when checked via OBD. Next task I guess is finding a decent tuner. Thanks

Pete Savel
Pete Savel

@Low Bux Theres actually a few ways. O2 sims or tuning them out are the best ways but non-foulers and o2 spacer bungs have also been known to work in certain applications. Tuning out the monitors is your best bet via standalone or a piggyback. Like I said, depends on the application and how much work your willing to do/ $ you want to spend on your build. Any decent tuner with the proper software can manipulate the DME/ ecu to delete any of the monitors that will light the CEL. There are a few ways to unlock and recode the DME to not even look for an o2, evap, EGR, etc. Efficiency faults can be intermittent again depending on application and scenario. When a catalyst is worn and exceeds its effectiveness I've reset the CEL for a P0420 I've had decent results running Cataclean and running the car to set the monitors and make it through the inspection. This has been successful in my experience usually more than 50% of the time. In a cat delete situation, I would just try one of the above I mentioned. The tuning or simulators always works if done correctly. The non-foulers or spacers will probably give you mixed results due to the difference in hardware versions and engine management from various manufacturers.

Low Bux
Low Bux

@Pete Savel Riddle me this. How do you get around the permanent CEL when the post CAT O2 sensors dont read the proper efficiency voltage levels (throwing P0420/P0430 codes)??

Pete Savel
Pete Savel

@Abc Abc Did you see his video??? He gutted the stock manifolds, knocking out the catalyst, and welded then back up. Virtually undetectable unless the car gets smogged for cO with a sniffer. Im not familiar with the emissions regulations and testing where he is from. I hold a valid NYS inspectors license. Your comment makes me think you didn't watch the video. He did it already, and its been done before.
