As a cyclist (who quite fancy the Italian countryside), I hope you guys spotted past the exits before committing to those slides........ :) Just kidding. Love your review! And honestly feel lots safer sharing roads with guys who appear to care about driving (and riding), and know their stuff, than with wallowing slowpokes in SUVs tending to cell phones and child seats. As for a more attainable GT cum Performance Car; the new GTI has the "same" sloping hood to a cheesegrater grille , similar autobox, turbo engine with 2/3rds the cylinders of it's respective class' "big dogs", digital cockpit, and equally silly touch sensitive interface....... I'd probably still pick the Roma, though. At least with someone else's money......... It does look an appropriate chariot for touring, and tearing up, Italy.

I wouldn't say that an Alpina is an affordable arternative of an M5. An Alpina B5 costs just as much as an M5. As of today, an Alpina B5 has a list price of 117.700€, the M5 on the other hand starts at 117.800€... You can get an M550i for 89k already, however it is nothing like the other 2 cars. So I really don't get the comparison of the M550i with the Alpina. The Alpina should be put against the M5 actually. Similar power, same starting price, different purpose.

Is it possible Toyota made the 4 door version of this car

Day ago
Paul Norman
Paul Norman

Thank goodness, no!!! The Civic, GTI et all, (as well as even the latest, overgrown 3 series...) already have drivers' doors borderline too short to be worthy of the "driver focused" car tagline. On a "rally" car, where tight, unpredictable, corners require looking more off center on occasion, B pillars trying to kiss your face would be even more annoying. Only chauffeured limos (and nans' cars designed specifically for carting kids to school) should be designed first and foremost around 4 doors. Everything else should be 2 doors. Perhaps with the option of 4, for those who absolutely need it. And even then, those rear doors really ought to be van style sliders, on all but limos. Besides, this is a reanimated Celica. Only the badge (and seating position.... :( ) is Yaris.

I can only agree. We fitted on one of the first delivered Yaris GR (ordered with Circuit package) our PROTRACK one wheel in 9.5x18 ET45 + 255/35-18 Nankang AR-1. Our customer (northloop enthusiast) entered the Northloop one day later and was completely flashed about the performance this car is able to deliver. With the wider wheels, which fit plug&play without any modifications, the cornering is so precise and the grip is 👌. In my opinion there is no better base for a track weapon on the market like the Yaris GR. Regards Christoph

Excellent review of the open diffs model, the first UK review of this model I believe. I come from STi's and Evo's so was comfortable to order one of these, (Convenience Pack), which will give me the same thrills as my old rally road cars which I miss so much. Tried the Golf R & now M135i Xdrive and neither really entertain me for driveability. Have to wait till March though for delivery 😉

@JB The retail price, black Convenience Pack, £31,760 including number plate transfer & full tank of fuel, plus a guarantee p/ex for my current car in March. I ordered after reading the Pistonheads review yesterday, I thought the open diffs wouldn't be much different as a daily with a few A&B road blasts in between, their review confirmed it as I thought. 👍

This car comes with softer suspension than the circuit pack car. This is a HUGE difference between with the two...... I find it bizarre that you haven't even mentioned this critical fact, a more subtle suspension setup in the convenience pack will make the car a better daily driver over bumpy roads. The suspension and LSDs are the main differences, sorry, but it's a massive journalistic oversight by not discussing the suspension

Banana The Cockatiel
Banana The Cockatiel

This is very true. Potentially more composed on B roads and less likely to be spooked mid corner on Sub optimal roads. They really need to back to back these on the street with either a control tyre (tire for my US friends) or both running Michelin PS4(S). I’d be surprised if you could really exploit the diffs at anything near road speeds.

I've said it previously but why can't Toyota UK offer the circuit pack with the convenience pack together or at least heated seats and park distance control as that rear window is awful small. Other markets do and Japan gets a fancy intercooler water spray cooler as an extra bonus ☹

Sounds like they've got the dynamic balance just about perfect for the £30k hot hatch market. Looks the business too. The Circuit pack, like BMW Comp etc, will serve those who want to progress dynamically but for whatever reason don't want to move up a class. I think Toyota's probably got this bang on.

I believe Toyota UK got this badly wrong selling a top model Circuit Pack completely stripped of what it was originally designed to come with. Always get the leftovers here in UK Was the same years ago with Subaru Impreza STi - 261bhp UK car, 320bhp twin scroll turbo JDM car.

@Paul Norman Agreed a true factory car would be very different and utterly undriveable for public road use, these models are simply based on the rules type... the torsens would come into play on loose surfaces and wet tarmac, anything which creates a deteriorated traction surface... but this article was focused on the road models to support the homologation process..nothing to do with the full on works teams machines.

Paul Norman
Paul Norman

@Alan Hunt Were the factory team to run one, they'd likely start with a regular, non-LSD one. They'd chuck what's there and use much tighter diffs than the road car anyway. As well as different, even racier wheels, tires, suspensions and pretty much anything. Pretty much no part of the driveline is part of WRC homologation. The circuit pack is a nice, well priced kit for amateur, stock "rallying." Mainly on low traction surfaces, but I suppose on paved tracks (and very tight roads) as well, if you're really hitting it 9+/10ths. Fast as it is, this street car, as opposed to factory racers, is still "just" a 260hp car. With full time awd, and a very developed suspension tuned for grippy tires. It will take some doing, before any corner slips enough for the torsens to be about all that much more than bragging rights.

Matt Crick
Matt Crick

@Alan Hunt I will get over it Alan, thank you. You will also have to get over the non-LSD model not being a hairdresser version. Let’s agree to disagree. Would love a go in the car in either guise to be honest, sadly far out of my price range.

Day ago
Alan Hunt
Alan Hunt

@Matt Crick Not in my opinion or context used, you will just have to get over it Matt and learn to enjoy your Yaris hot hatch the LSD is the only real homologation model.

Day ago
Matt Crick
Matt Crick

@Alan Hunt Alan, you used the term hairdressers version and I understand the expression perfectly. There is nothing hairdressery about either spec of these cars. You could spec something like a Megane RS with or without an LSD, does that make the one without it a hairdresser car? If you think it does, then it’s you that needs to have a think about what the term means or implies. Even without the LSD, this is not the ‘hairdresser model’ because the car is still far removed from a standard car. Yes the track pack enhances it further but without it fitted, it’s still far from a normal Toyota Yaris isn’t it. The term is very much misplaced for this car.
